OVER FIFTEEN years ago, Houstonian Mario Mendias founded a healthy convenience food service called My healthy foodswhich has quickly become a household name among busy young professionals and fitness gurus on the go.
But in 2017, led by then-new CEO David Goronkin â who took over the company for a brief stint following legal troubles on Mendias’ side â it abruptly closed its 50 locations in five states. The sudden bankruptcy and closure left few options for affordable pre-prepared and nutritious meals â and left Mendias appalled.
Fast forward to 2019, and Mendias purchased the trademark filed from the bankruptcy courts and began work on reviving its brand, an effort that culminated in the opening of six new physical locations across the country, including one in Houston, where it all started. Meals and snacks of the gluten-free, low-carb, and low-GI variety are available for pickup, delivery, or shipping; sous vide meals last 14 days in the refrigerator. Those who buy in bulk might be interested in a subscription service that earns 20% off all purchases. Additionally, the My Fit Life program offers consultations with registered dietitians and nutritionists.
Mendias says he plans to expand the brand to “all major cities by 2025” and will also expand his charity initiative: for every four meals purchased, one is donated to a shelter or non-profit organization charity that provides resources to the underserved.
