Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State described collecting reliable population data as a key requirement for effective national development planning.

Ikpeazu said this at his country house in Umuobiakwa, Obingwa Local Government Area of ​​Abia State, as he hosted a delegation from the National Population Commission, led by Johny Nwabuisi, federal commissioner representing Abia State on the commission.

Governor Ikpeazu has made it clear that periodic census is essential for national development, as governments at all levels need to know the exact number of people they serve and how best to allocate resources.

He explained that the realization of the importance of managing the population census led his administration to set up a population committee for the state, with the aim of liaising with the federal government. to ensure that the next population census will run smoothly in the state.

He assured the Federal Commissioner that his administration will work closely with the commission to ensure that the next census, scheduled for 2023, is successful.

Nwabuisi said APN officials were in Obingwa as part of their plan to organize a trial census, which is to be used to gauge their level of preparedness for the main census.

He also said it will be a good time for them to test out their various equipment in preparation for next year’s census.

Obingwa LGA, according to him, is one of the local government areas chosen for the trial. He thanked the governor for the foresight in setting up the state population committee under the chairmanship of Eric Nwakanma, former Deputy Governor of the state, describing it as a key step towards a census exercise successful in the state, and ensured that the commission work closely with the committee to capture the true population figure of Abia State.

Nwakanma also thanked the governor for establishing the committee and assured that they will do whatever is necessary to ensure that the true population figures of the state are captured in the next census.

Other members of the National Population Committee are Charles Ama, Ikechukwu Nwabeke, Randie Ukawoko, Ben Nwachi and MU Ihemadu.
